The annual Poppy Appeal has been launched in Dumfries and Galloway, with displays and collection boxes set up at various locations across the region. The appeal, which is part of Scotland’s largest fundraising campaign, aims to raise funds leading up to Remembrance Day in November. People are invited to donate and wear a poppy in honour of those who fought and sacrificed their lives in wars and conflicts. Annan Army Cadets were seen handing out poppies for donations on the town’s High Street.
Poppyscotland supporters kicked off the Scottish Poppy Appeal in Dumfries’ Loreburne Centre, with Richard Reade MBE appealing for continued support from local communities. Last year, Dumfries raised an impressive £2,245 for the appeal, making it the fourth highest fundraising town in Scotland. Money raised during the appeal goes towards providing essential support for service families, veterans, and current serving personnel in the Armed Forces community.
Volunteers will be distributing around three million poppies across Scotland, with Aldi stores in the region hosting Poppyscotland volunteers until November 11. Additionally, other shops and stores will have volunteers collecting donations in the coming week. In Morrisons Dumfries, the Crichton Writers group contributed war poems for display as part of this year’s appeal, thanking customers for their ongoing support.
