A 15-year-old boy has been detained for life with a minimum term of 13 years for the murder of Muhammad Hassam Ali, known as Ali, who tragically died after being stabbed in the heart in Birmingham city centre. The incident occurred on January 20 as Ali and his friend were chatting about cricket in Victoria Square. They were followed by two masked males they did not know, leading to Ali being stabbed in the chest by one of them. The sentencing took place at Birmingham Crown Court, where Judge Mr Justice Garnham highlighted the severe consequences of carrying knives in public places.
The court heard that Ali, aged 17, was a beloved son and brother, and his family has been left devastated by his untimely death. The attacker, a 15-year-old youth, was found guilty of murder and possessing a knife, while his friend, also 15, was convicted of manslaughter and possessing a knife. The second youth was sentenced to five years’ detention in secure accommodation. During the trial, it emerged that the attack was unprovoked, with the youths confronting Ali and his friend without any prior interaction.
The youth who carried out the fatal stabbing claimed in court that he only intended to scare Ali and his friend, stating that he carried a knife for protection due to past experiences of being attacked. He expressed regret and sorrow upon learning that Ali had died as a result of the incident. The other youth, who did not testify during the trial but spoke to police after his arrest, expressed shock and claimed ignorance of the knife until it was produced.
Both youths received emotional sentences, with family members present in the gallery. Ali’s family released a statement describing him as a promising engineer and expressing the profound impact of his loss. The court acknowledged the remorse shown by the youths’ legal representatives on behalf of their clients. Mr Justice Garnham emphasised the senseless nature of the attack and the lack of justification for using a knife against an unarmed individual.
