West Lothian Council has pledged £2.5 million to ensure the region can keep moving smoothly throughout the upcoming winter season. The funding will support the 2024/25 Winter Service, with an additional £168,000 set aside through the Winter Resilience Fund for any further needs that may arise. The plan, approved by the Council Executive on Tuesday 1 October, includes a provision for a minimum of 30,000 tonnes of salt to be made available for treating West Lothian’s extensive network, which comprises approximately 1,000km of roads and over 1,300km of footways.
In efforts to maintain road safety, two dedicated crews will be in place to refill over 2,000 grit bins across the council area during the winter months. Additionally, there will be 25 self-help points where residents can collect salt supplies as needed. The plan outlines a priority system that will be implemented to tackle winter conditions on roads and footways, ensuring that primary carriageway routes are treated around the clock as necessary.
