Archaeologists Uncover Ancient Egyptian Tomb with 11 Sealed Burials in New Excavation
Archaeologists from Egypt and the US have made a remarkable discovery near Luxor, unearthing an ancient tomb containing 11 sealed burials. The tomb, dating back to the Middle Kingdom period (1938 BC-1630 BC), was found in the South Asasif necropolis, located adjacent to the Temple of Hatshepsut on the Nile’s West Bank in Luxor, Egypt.
Mohamed Ismail Khaled, the secretary-general of the supreme council of antiquities in Egypt, revealed that the joint Egyptian-American mission uncovered coffins belonging to men, women and children in the tomb. This suggests that the tomb served as a burial site for a family over several generations during the 12th and early 13th dynasties.
Unfortunately, many of the wooden coffins and linen wrappings had been destroyed by ancient floods. However, the archaeologists found some items remarkably well-preserved, such as jewellery in women’s burials. Notably, a finely-crafted necklace adorned with 30 amethyst beads and two cylindrical agate beads surrounding a hippo-head amulet was among the discoveries. Additionally, two copper mirrors were found, one featuring a lotus-shaped handle and the other showcasing a unique design of Hathor, the ancient Egyptian goddess of the sky, women, fertility and love.
This significant archaeological find comes at a time when Egypt is actively working to attract more tourists, a vital source of foreign currency for the country. The tourism sector, heavily reliant on Egypt’s rich history of pharaonic artifacts, had faced challenges following political unrest in the aftermath of the 2011 uprising.
In recent news, the Grand Egyptian Museum, located near the iconic Giza Pyramids, previewed 12 halls showcasing pharaonic artifacts to visitors as a trial run before its official opening, scheduled to be announced soon.
