Former Dutch PM Mark Rutte Assumes Role as NATO Chief
Mark Rutte, the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, has taken over as the new chief of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg at a crucial time for the Western alliance. Rutte has pledged to bolster Western support for Ukraine, which is grappling with the aftermath of war. His appointment comes just ahead of the upcoming US presidential election in November, which features a contest between NATO-sceptic Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. He commended Trump for driving NATO allies to increase defence spending and acknowledged the elevated level of investment in defence throughout Trump’s tenure. Rutte also extended praise to both Trump and Harris, affirming his readiness to collaborate with either candidate to strengthen NATO’s collective defence capabilities.
Rutte’s mandate as NATO chief includes rallying member states to enhance troop deployment, armaments, and financial contributions to fortify the alliance’s defensive capabilities. He emphasised the urgency of intensifying collective defence measures, bridging capability gaps, and meeting NATO’s strategic objectives.
