Police hunt sex attacker after second knifepoint attack in 24 hours

Police in Northern Ireland are on the hunt for a sex attacker following a second knifepoint attack within 24 hours. Detectives suspect that the two attacks may be connected and are searching for a man in his 20s believed to be behind both incidents.

The latest assault took place in broad daylight on Saturday when a woman walking her dog was accosted by a man wielding a kitchen knife. The woman managed to fend off the attacker by swinging her dog lead at him, prompting him to flee the scene. Authorities have increased patrols in the Top of the Hill Park area in Londonderry to provide reassurance to residents.

According to reports, the man in his 20s, described as a white male around 5’11” tall with a slim build, was dressed in all black with his hoody pulled tightly around his face. Police are also looking into a similar attack that occurred the night before in Drumahoe, where a woman was allegedly assaulted and threatened at knifepoint.

PSNI Detective Inspector Ross Olphert reassured the community that a heightened police presence and patrolling plan have been put in place to address the concerns arising from the attacks. While investigations are ongoing to establish any definitive link between the two incidents, authorities stress that there is no connection to recent attacks in the city centre.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious behaviour to the police immediately and provide any information that could assist in the investigations. The police have also encouraged anyone with details to contact them via the non-emergency hotline or through Crimestoppers anonymously.

The safety and well-being of women and girls in the community remain a top priority, and efforts are being made to ensure they feel safe and empowered to navigate their daily lives without fear. The collaborative approach with the public and partners aims to address community concerns and enhance safety measures in the area.

In conclusion, the police in Northern Ireland are working diligently to ensure the safety of residents following two alarming knifepoint attacks. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities promptly to aid in the investigation and prevent further incidents.
