Certified dog trainer and owner of Five By Five Canine, Bronagh Daly, has highlighted six warning signs that indicate you should stop touching your pet immediately. Dogs, while affectionate animals, have their own comfort zones and ways of expressing discomfort. Since dogs cannot verbally communicate their discomfort, it is crucial for pet owners to recognise subtle signs that may indicate their pet is distressed or feeling threatened.
Bronagh Daly, with her expertise in canine behaviour, shared these warning signs with her followers on TikTok. The first sign she mentioned is if a dog suddenly stops moving while being petted, which suggests that you should remove your hand. Another warning sign is if you feel the dog’s muscles tensing under your hand as you pet them, prompting you to stop immediately. If a dog goes quiet or stops breathing audibly while being petted, it is advised to remove your hand.
Additionally, heavy panting during petting can indicate discomfort, in which case it is best to stop touching the dog. Bronagh also highlighted the behaviour of vibrating as a precursor to a growl, indicating that you should step back and remove your hand from the dog if you notice this sign. She further advised that if a dog leans away or moves away while being petted, it is essential to respect their space and give them the opportunity to reengage on their terms.
Bronagh’s insights sparked discussion among pet owners, with some sharing their experiences of similar behaviours in their own dogs. It is important for dog owners to be attuned to these subtle signs of discomfort to ensure the well-being of their pets. Understanding these warning signals can help prevent potential aggressive reactions and ensure a positive interaction between pets and their owners.
