Health expert explains why you’re waking up at 3am every night – and how to prevent it

A health expert has shed light on the possible reasons why individuals find themselves waking up at 3am every night and shared tips on how to prevent it. Dave Asprey, who focuses on promoting longevity and a healthy lifestyle, suggested on Instagram that fluctuating blood sugar levels could be responsible for these awakenings. He explained that a drop in cortisol and adrenaline levels might be disrupting sleep and recommended snacking on “raw honey, collagen, MCT oil,” or a combination of these to address the issue.

While Asprey’s insights have garnered attention, sleep expert Dave Gibson cautioned that there are more factors at play than just cortisol levels. Gibson highlighted the different sleep stages that occur throughout the night, with lighter stages becoming more prominent after 3am, making individuals more susceptible to waking up due to external stimuli. Stress, age-related changes in sleep patterns, and poor sleep hygiene were also identified as common disruptors of sleep.

In response to Asprey’s suggestions, Workplace Sleep Coach Nicole Ratcliffe expressed concerns about using blanket statements to promote products for sleep issues. Ratcliffe emphasised the importance of addressing root causes of sleep problems and improving sleep hygiene without relying on potentially expensive supplements. She advised focusing on understanding and making positive changes to bedtime routines and daytime activities to naturally improve sleep quality.

In conclusion, it’s crucial to consider various factors that can affect sleep patterns and to adopt strategies for better sleep hygiene. Understanding the complexities of sleep architecture and addressing stress and lifestyle habits can contribute to a more restful night’s sleep without necessarily relying on costly products or supplements. By prioritising holistic approaches to sleep health, individuals can work towards achieving a more rejuvenating and uninterrupted sleep experience.
