Ryanair passenger fuming as she’s charged £75 ‘over bag’s zip’

A Ryanair passenger was left incensed after being charged £75 for a surprising reason during her recent flight. Catherine Warrilow was traveling from Stansted to Seville when she encountered the unexpected fee. Despite having paid for priority boarding and two cabin bags in advance, she was told at the boarding gate that her cabin bag was 2cm over the allowed size. Catherine tried to adjust by removing some items and using a luggage strap to secure the bag within the required dimensions. However, the airline staff insisted that the bag’s expandable zip posed a risk of exceeding the size limit, leading to the £75 charge.

Taking to TikTok, Catherine, a 45-year-old from Oxford, expressed her frustration, stating that despite fitting within the sizing rack when closed, her bag was deemed too large. She recounted the ordeal of being given the ultimatum to either leave the bag behind or pay the fine. Catherine reluctantly paid an additional £35 to check the bag on her return flight, worried about facing another £75 penalty, bringing the total cost to £110.

Catherine’s experience caught the attention of consumer champion Helen Dewdney, who helped draft an email citing a possible breach of consumer laws. The result was a full refund from Ryanair within 24 hours of sending the email. Responding to the incident, Ryanair defended their staff’s actions as in line with their terms and conditions but offered a refund as a goodwill gesture. The Mirror has reached out to Ryanair for further comment on the matter.

Helen also shared advice for passengers regarding cabin luggage, urging travelers to carefully check airline luggage requirements, compare costs, and use measuring apps for documentation. Highlighting the importance of consumer rights, Helen noted that while many people do not challenge such fees, invoking consumer laws can lead to refunds and potentially set a precedent for airlines.

In conclusion, the incident sheds light on the challenges faced by passengers when it comes to airline policies and fees. It serves as a reminder for travelers to be aware of their rights, seek recourse when necessary, and advocate for fair treatment in the face of unexpected charges and inconveniences during air travel.
