Children in Motherwell recently marked the grand opening of a brand-new play area themed around steelworks on Roman Road. The vibrant play area was unveiled to the delight of families and children in the community. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Cathedral Primary School student, Cerys Lambert, whose winning design from the “Design-a-Sign” competition is now prominently displayed at the park’s entrance.
The project, a collaborative effort between North Lanarkshire Council’s Community Partnership Team, local resident Joe Wemyss, pupils from Cathedral Primary and Muir Street Primary, and the Lanarkshire Deaf Club, serves as a homage to Motherwell’s rich steelworks history. The park’s design cleverly incorporates elements inspired by the steel industry into the play equipment and ground surfaces, merging heritage with playfulness and physical activity.
Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of the council’s Communities Committee, expressed her enthusiasm during the opening ceremony. She highlighted that the play area not only provides a safe and enjoyable space for children but also celebrates the industrial legacy of Motherwell. The community-driven initiative showcased the collaborative efforts of local schools and community groups, underscoring the resilient spirit of the town.
Features of the play area include a Steelworks multi-play unit, accessible roundabout and trampoline, sign language boards, as well as a variety of swings such as a basket swing and roll runner. To cater to adults and families, new picnic benches have been installed for comfortable seating. The £140,000 project, funded by the Local Development Programme and the Scottish Government, was successfully managed by the council’s Community Partnership Team.
