Tribunal battle begins for three home carers fighting for equal pay against Scotland’s biggest council

Three home carers from Glasgow City Council have initiated an employment tribunal in pursuit of equal pay. Lorraine Donnachie, Audrey Masson, and Helen Mitchell, who work as home carers for the council, believe they are owed thousands in compensation. The women rejected previous equal pay offers, citing lack of transparency from the council, unions, and lawyers in calculating the settlements.

Their first hearing at the employment tribunal in Glasgow marks the beginning of their battle for fair compensation. Lorraine, 61, expressed her hope for a resolution after years of fighting for their rights, stating, “The council have tried to delay and ignore us but we’re determined to get what we’re entitled to.”

Glasgow City Council has already settled nearly 19,000 claims amounting to £770m since 2018, with many women accepting offers based on recommendations from unions and claims firm Action4Equality. However, it was later revealed that a significant portion of the settlements went towards legal fees despite union members being promised free representation.

Facing the tribunal without union support, the three home carers are determined to seek justice. Lorraine highlighted the challenges of representing themselves but remains steadfast in their pursuit of fair compensation. The closed hearing session in Glasgow indicated a willingness from the women to engage in mediation to resolve the dispute, with another hearing scheduled for December 16.

Despite efforts to raise awareness of their situation with local politicians yielding no response, the women remain resolute in their fight for equal pay. Glasgow City Council has acknowledged the existence of outstanding claims and emphasised the claimants’ right to pursue the appropriate course of action.

The dedication and perseverance shown by these home carers reflect the ongoing struggle for gender equality in the workplace. As they navigate the complexities of the legal system to secure fair compensation, their courage serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

In summary, the article discusses the tribunal battle initiated by three home carers against Glasgow City Council for equal pay. Despite facing obstacles and lack of support, the women are determined to fight for their rights and seek fair compensation. Their resolve underscores the ongoing pursuit of gender equality in the workforce, highlighting the importance of transparency and fairness in compensation practices.
