Tennis legends Andy and Jamie Murray are set to receive a special honour in their hometown of Dunblane as plans are in place for road signs to be dedicated to the famous brothers. The proposal, which also includes a statue and a tourist trail, aims to celebrate the achievements of the Murrays and boost tourism in Dunblane.
The highlight of the plan is a new welcome sign at the entrance of Dunblane, featuring the names of Andy and Jamie Murray. Paul Nelson, chair of the Dunblane town centre group, revealed that the sign would read, “Welcome to the Catherdral City of Dunblane home of the tennis greats Andy and Jamie Murray.” The proposal has received support from various groups, including the working group and the development trust.
In addition to the road sign, there are discussions about creating a tourist trail in Dunblane that would showcase landmarks associated with the Murrays, such as Sir Andy’s gold post box and a mural of him at the Dunblane tennis club. A local museum also houses Andy memorabilia that could be incorporated into the trail. While a statue of the brothers is also being considered, fundraising efforts would be necessary to bring this idea to life.
Local councillor Alasdair Tollemache expressed his support for the road sign initiative, stating, “I am very keen to see the Murray’s tremendous sporting achievements recognised.” Residents of Dunblane believe that it is important for visitors to know about the brothers’ roots and how they developed their talents in the town. The proposal is expected to be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the Dunblane Community Council.
A spokesperson from Stirling Council commended the Murrays for their contributions to both sport and Dunblane, indicating that they would consider any proposals put forward by the local community. The honouring of Andy and Jamie Murray through road signs and other initiatives is seen as a way to celebrate their success and inspire future generations of athletes.
