West Lothian Student Receives Rising Talent Award from Actress Elaine C Smith
A West Lothian student, Eva MacCallum, has made history by becoming the first recipient of the prestigious Elaine C Smith Award. Presented by acclaimed actress Elaine C Smith, Eva received a £500 prize from New College Lanarkshire. The Elaine C Smith Award, established by the renowned actress and Fellow of New College Lanarkshire, is aimed at recognising and supporting female students in the Performing Arts department who excel in comedy.
Expressing her gratitude at the college’s Motherwell campus, Eva MacCallum, a Livingston native, stated, “I am so grateful for this award and to Elaine. It’s so important that women create these opportunities so other women can follow in their footsteps and prove we can take the spotlight.” Having completed her degree in Performing Arts earlier this year, Eva has already showcased her talent in various productions, including a performance in Bathgate’s Reconnect Theatre’s production of Macbeth at the Edinburgh festival.
Eva highlighted the positive impact of her time at New College Lanarkshire, emphasising the valuable connections she made with fellow students and lecturers, which fostered a strong sense of community. Elaine C Smith, in awarding Eva the prize, aimed to empower young women from working-class backgrounds to pursue careers in the arts. Elaine shared, “I decided to start this because I’m from the area, from Newarthill, and when I was growing up I didn’t believe anyone who spoke like me could become an actor.”
She added, “So, I wanted to leave a trail of little sweeties for the young women coming up now – saying here’s the route, you can do this!” The award ceremony saw Elaine presenting Eva with a cheque and ceremonial quaich, symbolising the beginning of a new chapter in Eva’s promising career in the performing arts.
