Scared Woman Seeks Refuge in Bedroom from Abusive Partner
A woman took extreme measures to protect herself from her abusive partner, Kristopher Kerrigan, by barricading herself in a bedroom whenever he had been drinking. The 36-year-old from Pine Grove, Calderbank, is now facing time behind bars after pleading guilty to domestic abuse charges at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
The court heard disturbing details of the abuse the victim endured between 2019 and 2023, which resulted in her losing weight and suffering from anxiety due to derogatory comments made by Kerrigan. His violent behaviour escalated when he was under the influence of alcohol, leading the victim to fear for her safety and barricade herself in a room using furniture as a barrier.
The abuse included physical violence, with Kerrigan on one occasion pouring a two-litre bottle of water over the victim after finding out that an ex-partner had contacted her. He also failed to attend court and resorted to sending abusive and threatening messages to the woman in July and August of this year.
Despite the victim reporting Kerrigan to the police after he slapped her, she faced further intimidation as he berated her for seeking help, threatening her with more violence. The situation escalated to the point where Kerrigan missed his trial in August as he was on a holiday in Greece, prompting him to send alarming messages to the victim, including threats to harm her.
Kerrigan was arrested upon his return to the UK and has been held in custody since September 10. His defence lawyer acknowledged the toxic nature of the couple’s relationship and condemned Kerrigan’s messages as abhorrent but insisted they were empty threats.
The seriousness of the offences led Sheriff John Hamilton to defer sentencing for background reports and deny bail, citing concerns of Kerrigan being a potential flight risk. The victim’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the harrowing reality faced by many individuals trapped in abusive relationships.
