Shop workers in Edinburgh faced a terrifying ordeal as masked thugs launched a violent firework attack on Sugar and Treats in the Moredun area on Bonfire Night. The gang, consisting of around 40 individuals dressed in black, attempted to raid the shop by pelting bricks and setting off fireworks outside the front door, targeting an outdoor seating area. Shocking CCTV footage captured the gang rushing into the sheltered area, lighting fireworks, throwing bricks and rocks at windows, and even launching a firework towards the entrance. As staff members cowered in fear inside, one thug was seen igniting a firework and hurling a chair at the front window, causing sparks to fly dangerously close to the entrance.
The distressed shop owner, Usmaan Irshad, expressed his outrage at the traumatic attack, stating that his employees were genuinely afraid for their lives during the chaotic incident. Describing the scene as a “war-zone,” Usmaan highlighted the potential dangers faced by the staff, expressing gratitude that the situation did not escalate further. He revealed that this attack followed a series of incidents, including a firework exploding inside the shop on Halloween. Despite attempts by neighbouring shop staff to reason with the thugs, the situation quickly turned violent, with one worker sustaining injuries from the thrown bricks and rocks.
Apart from the damage inflicted on the shop, one staff member’s car was also vandalised by the perpetrators. Usmaan estimated the total cost of the damage to be up to £1,000 and emphasised the need for decisive action to address the disorderly behaviour. He expressed concern over the safety of his staff and the impact on their willingness to continue working under such conditions. Usmaan has taken steps to report the incident to local authorities and seek support to address the escalating violence.
The police have been contacted for further comment on the matter, as investigations into the incident are ongoing. The community stands in solidarity with the shop workers, condemning the senseless violence and advocating for measures to ensure the safety and security of businesses and employees in the area.
