Concerns have been raised regarding the management of medication at Fairknowe Care Home Service in Ayrshire. The care home, located on Cargill Road in Maybole, came under scrutiny during a recent unannounced inspection by the Care Inspectorate. The inspection focused on evaluating the progress made on previous requirements and areas for improvement identified during a previous visit in July 2024, with a particular emphasis on enhancing the care provided to residents.
The Care Inspectorate noted positive aspects such as the presence of “warm and caring” relationships between staff and residents, as well as the introduction of a food focus group to involve residents in menu planning. However, there remained a need for further improvement in the management of medication within the service. Specifically, concerns were raised about the safe and effective handling of medication at the care home.
Fairknowe House is registered to offer care services to up to 40 older individuals with physical or dementia-related needs, operated by Mead Medical Services Limited. Although the care home received a ‘good’ rating across two quality indicators in a previous inspection this year, it was rated as ‘adequate’ in three other areas. The latest inspection highlighted ongoing issues with medication management, prompting the Care Inspectorate to set a new deadline for improvement.
The report from the inspection stated that there were still gaps in medication administration records, and staff were not consistently adhering to best practice guidelines, particularly in detailed record-keeping. These shortcomings could potentially impact the safe administration of medication and residents’ health outcomes negatively. As a result, Fairknowe Care Home Service has been given until 19 January 2025 to address these concerns and ensure the safety and well-being of residents through effective medication management.
