Lanarkshire to host part of RAC Rally of the Tests
Lanarkshire is gearing up to play a pivotal role in hosting part of the prestigious RAC Rally of the Tests, a challenging 750-mile rally that will bring together vintage vehicles and crews from around the world. The event, spanning four days, will include two high-speed runs at the Forrestburn hillclimb track and West of Scotland kart club track, as well as a road section through South Lanarkshire. With 80 crews participating from countries as diverse as the USA and Hong Kong, the race features three Scottish duos, including Lanark couple George and Rosalind Topp in their 1966 Volvo Amazon 132S.
The rally, which starts in Darlington and covers Edinburgh and Lanarkshire before finishing in Windermere, aims to recreate the spirit of the famed RAC Rallies of the 1960s. Vintage cars from various renowned manufacturers will take on 30 speed tests across private estates, hill climb tracks, forests, and military land. Notable locations in Lanarkshire where speed tests will be conducted include the Monklands sporting car club and the West of Scotland track in Larkhall. Crews will make a stop at the Strathaven Hotel for a rest break during the Lanarkshire leg, before heading towards Ayrshire for another speed trial at Kames racetrack.
Among the participants are former Hamilton Advertiser journalist George and his wife Rosalind, now based in France, who are seeded 24th in what is termed as one of Europe’s toughest historic regularity rallies. The Scottish contingent also includes 2023 winners Dan Willan and navigator Niall Frost, as well as Callum Guy co-driven by Amy Henchoz. The diversity of the event is highlighted by the vintage of cars participating, which range from 1936 to 1990.
The RAC Rally of the Tests promises an exciting showcase of vintage cars and skilled drivers navigating challenging terrains, adding a touch of nostalgia and thrill to the motorsport scene in Lanarkshire.
