Falkirk School Set for Move Due to Unsuitable Premises
Falkirk Council’s executive has approved a consultation to relocate a school in Laurieston to Langlees, citing the current premises as “not fit for purpose”. The school in question, the Inclusion & Wellbeing Service (IWBS), caters to pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs. The proposed move will involve the school taking over the Dawson Centre and the Excellence in Childcare building, both of which are community facilities currently in use.
The decision to relocate the IWBS comes as part of the council’s ongoing strategic property review, which includes the closure of the current community centres in Laurieston. Despite initial interest from community groups in taking over one of the centres, this option has not been pursued. However, plans are in place to ensure continued community access to the facilities in Langlees outside of school hours.
The existing premises in Laurieston are reported to be in poor condition with a significant maintenance backlog, while the estimated cost of necessary changes to the Dawson campus is around £800,000. In contrast, the properties in Langlees are in better condition, more accessible, and more energy-efficient. The move will also provide the IWBS with outdoor areas and sports facilities, which the current site lacks.
The new campus in Langlees will offer separate primary and secondary classrooms, dedicated support areas, as well as shared facility management with Langlees Primary. The transition to the new location is planned to be gradual for the 12 primary and 20 secondary pupils currently enrolled in the IWBS. Additionally, support will be provided to community groups affected by the move, such as the local food bank.
Cllr Iain Sinclair, SNP’s education portfolio holder, emphasised the importance of providing modern and purpose-built facilities to support children and young people in the community. The consultation period for the relocation will run from November 11 to December 23, with a public meeting scheduled for November 26 at the Dawson Centre.
