A man was viciously attacked by his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, resulting in a broken jaw in an unprovoked assault. Nathan McTaggart, 22, of South Place, Bellshill, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week, where he admitted to assaulting the victim to his severe injury and permanent impairment. The incident took place in a pub’s beer garden on June 17 last year when McTaggart jumped over a fence and ambushed the victim.
Rebecca Clark, the prosecutor, revealed that the victim and his girlfriend were engaged in conversation with a friend in the beer garden when McTaggart approached and made a derogatory comment. Without any warning or reason, McTaggart landed a heavy blow on the victim, knocking off his glasses and causing him to stumble. The victim’s girlfriend prevented him from falling, describing the attack as a blindsiding assault.
The force of the blow resulted in two fractures to the victim’s jaw, leading to surgery under general anaesthetic where plates were inserted to repair the damage. Unfortunately, complications arose when one of the plates became infected, necessitating further surgical procedures. The victim continues to suffer from numbness in his chin and bottom lip, along with difficulty in opening his mouth and eating properly due to ongoing infections.
The assault has not only left physical scars but has also impacted the victim’s mental health, causing him to experience nightmares, sleep disturbances, social anxiety, and fear of being assaulted again. Sheriff Louise Gallacher deferred McTaggart’s sentencing until next month for background reports, taking into consideration his lack of previous convictions.
This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and highlights the importance of accountability for perpetrators of such reprehensible acts in society.
In a distressing turn of events, a man endured a brutal assault by his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, resulting in a broken jaw and significant physical and emotional trauma. The unprovoked attack, as detailed in court proceedings, underscores the need for stringent measures against acts of senseless violence. It is imperative for society to address such behaviour and ensure justice for victims who suffer the enduring consequences of such heinous acts.
