A shocking incident took place in Hamilton when a customer brandished an air gun at shop staff in a fit of rage after they refused to sell him pellets for the gun. Jay Gibb, 22, was later found to be carrying a knife as well when the police caught up with him. Gibb appeared in court at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he pleaded guilty to threatening or abusive behaviour at Home Essentials in Quarry Street on March 20. This incident occurred just two days after he had been granted bail at the same court.
According to Neil Thomson, the prosecutor, Gibb entered the shop and requested gun pellets, claiming he intended to harm himself. When the shopkeeper declined to sell him the pellets, Gibb became agitated, shouted and swore at the staff, and then revealed a BB gun, cocking it in front of them. Despite being refused the pellets again, he waved the gun around before leaving the premises. The police were informed, and officers located Gibb in Larkhall, where they discovered the BB gun and a knife with a four-inch blade in his possession.
During the court proceedings, Gibb’s defence agent, Gregor Jarrott, acknowledged the seriousness of his client’s actions and informed the court that Gibb has struggled with mental health issues. Sheriff Liam Murphy, addressing Gibb, expressed his concern for the shop staff who had to endure such a frightening experience. As a result, Gibb’s sentencing was deferred for background reports, and he was remanded in custody until later this month.
