Hamilton Gathers to Honour the Fallen at Remembrance Events
Hamilton will fall silent this weekend to remember all those who served and gave their lives in both World Wars and in conflicts across the globe. Acts of Remembrance will take place at the town’s cenotaph in Bothwell Park on Sunday afternoon, followed by an Armistice Day commemoration at the Victoria Cross memorial in the town centre on Monday morning, November 11. Both events will see poppy wreaths laid by local dignitaries, politicians and community organisations, and will include the poignant Last Post, a piper’s lament, and a two-minute silence.
The Remembrance Sunday service at the war memorial in Bothwell Park will start at 2.30 pm and will be attended by South Lanarkshire provost Margaret Cooper and vice lord lieutenant of Lanarkshire Gavin Whitefield. Military detachments and veterans will parade to and from the event, along with local politicians, representatives of emergency services, uniformed organisations, community groups, and residents paying their respects. The service will be led by Rev Ross Blackman of Hamilton Old Parish Church and Rev Joanne Hood of St John’s Parish Church, with readings given by pupils from Hamilton Grammar.
Armistice Day falls on Monday, November 11, and a public service will be held at the Victoria Cross memorial at Castle Street in Hamilton at 10.40 am. The service will include a pause for reflection during the national two-minute silence at 11 am, with pupils of Hamilton College giving readings. Depute provost Bert Thomson will be in attendance. He also participated in last weekend’s annual Festival of Remembrance at Hamilton Town House.
In summary, Hamilton is gearing up to pay its respects to the fallen heroes with two significant Remembrance events this weekend. The town will unite in solemn ceremonies to honour and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The acts of Remembrance serve as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in conflicts past and present.
