Armed thug Ryan Chalmers, who filmed police siege at his East Kilbride home, had earlier threatened to ‘chop up’ a neighbour. The tense three-hour stand-off was shared on social media, with thousands tuning in to watch the drama unfold. Chalmers, a 32-year-old father of two, was ultimately sentenced to 10 months in jail after admitting to threatening and abusive behaviour in the incident that took place at his home in Lyttleton on July 25.
Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that the confrontation began when Chalmers, shirtless and wielding a pickaxe shaft, confronted a neighbour sitting on his doorstep around 6 pm. Chalmers threatened violence, shouting threats and challenging the neighbour to a fight. The police were called to the scene, where Chalmers continued his menacing behaviour by threatening to harm his neighbour further. Specialist firearms officers were eventually summoned as Chalmers barricaded himself inside, filming the police and live streaming the ordeal on TikTok.
Despite negotiations and the arrival of an ambulance, Chalmers only agreed to leave his house at 9.50 pm. His defence lawyer argued that the neighbour’s actions of filming Chalmers’ partner without consent had triggered the confrontation. The lawyer also mentioned that Chalmers struggles with mental health issues and filmed the police out of fear for his own safety.
Sheriff Louise Gallacher, upon sentencing Chalmers, highlighted his history of violent offences and the significant fear and disruption he caused. The incident not only required police resources but also the deployment of other emergency services.
