Scots mum issues urgent Turkey holiday warning after son ‘almost came home in body bag’

A Scottish mother has issued an urgent warning to holidaymakers after a terrifying experience on a trip to Turkey nearly cost her son his life. Ashley Bain, along with her husband Jamie, their two children, and Jamie’s parents, set off on what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing holiday. However, their dream quickly turned into a nightmare when they all fell severely ill, with Ashley describing it as “the holiday from hell.”

The family’s troubles began on the second day of their holiday after having a buffet breakfast at their hotel. While Ashley and Jamie were out, the rest of the family started to feel unwell, with symptoms of food poisoning. The situation rapidly deteriorated, with the children, especially Ashley’s son River, becoming extremely ill. River was unable to keep any food or water down and became lethargic and unresponsive.

Ashley had to rush River to the hotel’s on-site nurse, who then called a doctor. The doctor diagnosed River with dehydration and an infection as a result of the illness, requiring immediate treatment. The severity of the situation was made clear to Ashley when the doctor warned that River could develop potentially fatal sepsis if the infection spread to his blood.

As the family dealt with River’s illness, their daughter Mila also fell sick but fortunately did not reach the same critical condition as her brother. Despite the traumatic experience, River eventually started to recover, allowing the family to return home. Ashley expressed her gratitude that her son was able to stop taking medication just two days before their departure.

In an exclusive interview with BirminghamLive, Ashley shared the emotional toll the experience had on her family, highlighting the importance of cherished holiday time together. She emphasised the traumatic impact the ordeal had on everyone and the missed opportunities to make lasting memories. Seeking compensation from the travel company Jet2, Ashley voiced her disappointment in not getting the holiday they had planned and the subsequent financial loss.

Jet2 responded by expressing regret over the family’s ordeal but noted the absence of evidence linking the illnesses to the hotel’s food. The company stated they were open to investigating further if provided with supporting evidence. As Ashley and her family attempt to recover from their harrowing experience, they serve as a cautionary tale for holidaymakers to be vigilant and prepared for unexpected challenges during their trips.

In conclusion, Ashley’s warning serves as a reminder of the importance of health and safety precautions while travelling, as well as the unpredictability of holiday experiences. It underscores the need for thorough research and preparations to handle unforeseen circumstances during vacations, ensuring the well-being of all travellers.
