Youth groups in Rutherglen encouraged to join new initiative which highlights harms of vaping

Youth groups in Rutherglen are being urged to participate in a new initiative by ASH Scotland that aims to raise awareness of the harmful effects of vaping and smoking. The initiative, called the Youth Conversations Hub, offers educational resources on smoking and vaping to help young people make informed decisions to safeguard their long-term well-being. ASH Scotland will be hosting a series of in-person and online events through the hub in the coming months, providing an opportunity for individuals working with youth organisations to enhance their understanding of how tobacco and e-cigarettes impact young people’s health.

The Youth Conversations Hub also offers a platform for young individuals to share their perspectives and experiences regarding smoking and vaping through a youth survey running until Friday, November 29. Sheila Duffy, the Chief Executive of ASH Scotland, expressed her enthusiasm for the launch of the Youth Conversations Hub. She emphasized the importance of equipping youth group organisers and volunteers in Rutherglen and across Scotland with the tools to engage in conversations with young people, increase their knowledge about smoking and vaping, and empower them to make choices that prioritise their physical and mental health.

By signing up for the hub, youth organisations can play a crucial role in helping young people recognise the tactics used by the tobacco and e-cigarette industries to target children. The aim is to inspire youngsters to assert their right to lead healthy lives by rejecting smoking or vaping. ASH Scotland believes in amplifying young people’s voices, and thus, they are conducting a survey through youth organisations that join the hub, enabling young individuals to steer the actions necessary to achieve Scotland’s goal of becoming a tobacco-free generation by 2034.

By providing resources, hosting events, and facilitating discussions, the Youth Conversations Hub aims to equip young individuals with the knowledge and agency to make informed choices for their well-being. It underscores the importance of amplifying young voices in shaping a future generation free from the harms of tobacco and e-cigarettes.
