A mother from Edinburgh has criticised the city council for what she claims has been a 24-year wait for a suitable home. Donna Arnot, now 42, has been hoping for a two-bedroom house for herself and her daughter since she was 18 years old. Despite her long-standing application, Donna has expressed frustration at not being able to secure a property in the area she grew up in, where she has access to childcare facilities.
According to Donna, at least two council homes with two bedrooms have been sold off in the past three years, on Ardshiel Avenue and Dochart Drive. She questions the council’s decision to sell properties when there is a declared housing emergency and when many people are facing homelessness. Donna highlights the challenges she faces in providing a stable home for her daughter due to the lack of suitable housing options available to her.
Responding to the situation, Edinburgh City Council defended their policy of selling properties to increase the housing stock, citing the sale of 205 homes and the purchase of 405 homes. They also mentioned that due to the high demand for temporary accommodation, they have halted the sale of homes that were not already under offer, to be used as temporary housing.
Donna voiced her concerns about the state of social housing in Edinburgh and the impact it may have on future generations. She criticised the current housing system, calling for updates and improvements to better address the housing crisis in the city.
