Initially, fraudsters establish counterfeit Gmail accounts and begin disseminating emails masquerading as legitimate businesses. These communications insinuate that the user has infringed copyright on their personal social media accounts, with immediate removal then demanded. The message includes instructions on how to remove the content, directing users to download a file. If duped, this immediately activates the infection and installs the latest iteration of the Rhadamanthys stealer, which can then commence spying on PCs and swiping highly personal data.
“Check Point Research recently identified a large-scale phishing campaign using a new version of the infamous Rhadamanthys Stealer, a sophisticated malware designed to extract data from infected machines,” confirmed the team at Check Point. It seems that this threat has targeted users worldwide, with messages being sent to individuals in Europe, Asia and the USA. Check Point has highlighted one of the most concerning aspects of this latest campaign – the sheer volume of impersonated emails that have been circulated. Around 70% of the impersonated companies fall within the entertainment, media, technology, and software sectors.
