Barcodes are Set to Disappear from All Products, Morrisons and Amazon Say

Barcodes, a staple in UK shopping for decades, are on the brink of vanishing from shop items across the United Kingdom within the next five years, as per a report by GS1 UK. Retail expert Kate Hardcastle has emphasized the importance of new technologies that provide direct data to consumers as essential in restoring consumer trust, indicating the imminent end of traditional barcodes.

The upcoming generation of Smart QR codes is poised to offer consumers instant access to extensive online information about products, revolutionizing the retail sector. A survey has revealed that 41% of top UK retail executives are confident that smart QR codes will replace linear barcodes within the next five years. Trials for QR code-equipped products are currently underway in 48 countries, with a goal of widespread implementation by 2027. Major names such as PepsiCo, Walmart, Procter & Gamble, L’Oreal, and Amazon have already committed to adopting this innovative approach.

Morrisons is actively exploring the potential benefits of these new technologies, with solutions architect Sagar Mehendale stating that smart QR codes are well-positioned to become the “de facto standard for identifying your product at SKU level and enhancing information about the product.” With QR codes, customers will have immediate access to highly relevant details, such as product origin, carbon footprint, or alerts on potential food allergen contamination.

An impressive aspect of this new technology is that it allows environmentally conscious consumers to track the source of product components, emissions generated during manufacturing and transport, as well as enabling ethical consumers to understand the labour standards associated with each product. Over a third of business executives foresee customer access to product information as one of the most significant changes in retail by 2030.

Retail strategist Kate Hardcastle underlined the importance of transparency in providing consumers with accessible and honest information, stating that it will give brands a competitive edge in a consumer-driven market. Anne Godfrey, CEO of GS1 UK, in collaboration with FT Longitude, highlighted the potential of QR codes to empower consumers with detailed product information, catering to the growing demand for transparency in the retail landscape.

The reinvention of barcoding technology through QR codes is seen as a significant step towards enhancing consumer power and driving the next retail revolution, connecting physical products to the digital realm to meet the evolving needs of consumers. This shift is expected to redefine the shopping experience for customers and offer valuable insights into products like never before.

In conclusion, the transition from traditional barcodes to Smart QR codes is set to reshape the retail landscape, placing a greater emphasis on transparency, consumer empowerment, and enhanced product information access for shoppers. As major retailers like Morrisons and Amazon lead the way in adopting this innovative technology, consumers can look forward to a more informed and empowered retail experience in the near future.
