A recent study has revealed a worrying connection between childhood asthma and memory problems in children, suggesting that an early onset of the condition could exacerbate these issues, potentially increasing the risk of dementia. The study, which involved 473 children over a two-year period, found that children with asthma performed poorly in memory tasks compared to their peers. Lead researcher Prof Simona Ghetti from the University of California’s Centre for Mind and Brain highlighted the importance of considering asthma as a possible cause of cognitive difficulties in children. Previous research has also indicated a link between asthma and a higher likelihood of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in older adults and animal models.
Nicholas Christopher-Hayes, a psychology PhD candidate from UC Davis and lead author of the study, suggested that asthma could lead children on a path that increases their risk of developing more serious conditions like dementia in adulthood. While the exact mechanism behind the memory issues associated with asthma remains unclear, experts propose factors such as persistent inflammation due to asthma or disruptions in brain oxygen supply during attacks may play a role. The study, published in Jama Network Open, utilized data from 2,062 nine to ten-year-old children with asthma to investigate the impact on episodic memory and cognitive functioning.
Episodic memory helps individuals recall personal experiences, emotions, and associated people or objects from those events. The research, part of the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, underscores the need to explore factors that could exacerbate or mitigate the risks posed by chronic diseases like asthma on cognitive development. By shedding light on the potential consequences of childhood asthma on memory and cognitive function, this study paves the way for further research into early interventions to safeguard children’s cognitive health in the long run.
