A 13-year-old girl has been accused of stabbing her seven-year-old sister to death following an argument believed to have started over flushing the toilet. The incident unfolded at a home in Taylor, Michigan, on Saturday when the teen was babysitting her younger sister, as reported by Taylor Detective Zachary Digiacomo to FOX2Detroit.
Police disclosed that a note had been placed in the bathroom regarding flushing the toilet, leading to a verbal altercation between the siblings. During the argument, the 13-year-old allegedly stabbed her sister multiple times in the abdomen, head, and neck using a butcher’s knife and a hunting knife. The teen then made a distress call to 911.
Upon arriving at around 1 pm, authorities discovered the victim in the bathroom with over 10 stab wounds. She was swiftly taken to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, as confirmed by the Wayne County prosecutor’s office in a press release.
The teenage suspect now faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, and first-degree child abuse. Detective Digiacomo described the teen as “very calm and just showed no emotion” following the incident. The identities of both the victim and the suspect have not been revealed due to their ages.
The parents of the siblings informed the police that they had entrusted their older daughter to babysit her younger sister for just two hours when the tragic attack took place. They insisted that prior to this incident, the siblings had only experienced “normal sibling arguments.”
A neighbour expressed shock about the incident, describing the victim as a sweet little girl who would often interact with neighbours by riding her bike up and down the street.
Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that the 13-year-old will not be tried as an adult but will be dealt with within the juvenile justice system. Worthy explained that due to her young age, the state would have seven years to provide treatment and rehabilitation until her mandatory release at 21, with the hope that she would not pose a danger to others in the future.
Worthy acknowledged the horrific nature of the case, expressing deep concern over a 13-year-old being allegedly responsible for the stabbing death of her seven-year-old sister. The decision to handle the case within the juvenile system was deemed appropriate under the circumstances.
