Cruise passengers told to ‘stay far, far away’ from these six European cities

Cruise passengers have been warned to avoid certain European cities due to safety concerns, as highlighted by travel expert Gary Bembridge. Not all ports in Europe are considered safe for tourists, even when cruise ships dock there. Bembridge specifically pointed out the risks of pickpocketing targeting tourists in some of the Mediterranean’s most popular ports. These areas, which are major embarkation and disembarkation points for ships, pose safety risks for travellers. Among the cities mentioned are Barcelona in Spain, Rome and Livorno in Italy, and Athens in Greece.

Gary Bembridge, speaking on his Tips for Travel YouTube Channel, described the crime in these cities as typical of big cities, with pickpocketing and theft being common issues. He emphasized that tourists need to be vigilant, as incidents of theft have been reported by passengers in each of these cities. In Barcelona, La Rambla was highlighted as a hotspot for pickpocketing due to its bustling nature and popularity among tourists. In Rome, incidents of pickpocketing have been reported, while in Athens, a follower of Gary fell victim to a pickpocket on public transport, leading to the loss of a passport and disrupting travel plans.

Travellers heading to Livorno, a gateway port for Florence and Pisa, were advised to exercise caution when exploring larger tourist cities. Bembridge recommended checking travel advisories before visiting a port and sticking to organised excursions for added safety. For independent explorers, he suggested noting down the details of a local port agent to assist in case of any incidents during the trip.

In summary, while European cities like Barcelona, Rome, Livorno, and Athens are popular destinations for cruise passengers, tourists are urged to be cautious and aware of potential safety risks such as pickpocketing. By staying vigilant, following travel advisories, and taking necessary precautions, travellers can enjoy their cruise experience while staying safe and secure.
