Lanarkshire residents received benefits totalling over £276 million from Social Security Scotland in the last fiscal year, as part of the £1.9 billion distributed across Scotland. The Scottish Government disclosed this information in its analysis alongside the Annual Report and Accounts of Social Security Scotland. Among the 14 benefits provided, seven are exclusive to Scotland and offer crucial assistance to individuals navigating the current cost-of-living challenges. Noteworthy achievements highlighted in the report include the Winter Heating Payment benefiting 400,000 recipients by February this year and the introduction of the Carer Support Payment, which has replaced the Carer’s Allowance from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Support extends to various demographics such as carers, disabled individuals, families, pensioners, young job starters, and those needing help with funeral costs. Social Security Scotland disbursed £463 million in payments to aid low-income families with living expenses through five family payments, including Best Start Foods, three Best Start Grants, and the Scottish Child Payment. The organisation’s annual Client Survey revealed that 90% of respondents who received benefits reported a ‘very good’ or ‘good’ experience, with 89% acknowledging they were treated kindly.
Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Shirley-Anne Somerville, emphasised the commitment to alleviating poverty and supporting individuals across Scotland, particularly during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. She underscored the importance of ensuring individuals receive the entitled financial assistance while being treated with dignity and fairness. Social Security Scotland’s Chief Executive, David Wallace, highlighted the expansion of services, introduction of new payments like the Carer Support Payment, and continued focus on enhancing client satisfaction.
As the number of beneficiaries grows, maintaining high satisfaction rates remains a priority for Social Security Scotland. The organisation has made improvements in reducing call waiting times, processing applications more efficiently, and simplifying the submission of supporting documentation for disability benefit claims. The commitment to providing essential financial support with care and respect underscores the dedication of Social Security Scotland in serving the community.
