Royal Recognition for Perth Hospital Radio Station
A volunteer-run hospital radio service in Perth has recently received prestigious royal recognition. CareSound Radio, known operationally as Hospital Radio Perth, has been serving Perth Royal Infirmary since 1989 and has expanded its services to include over 30 regional care homes. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service has honoured CareSound Radio for its exceptional work in supporting the community through the dedication of its 40 volunteers. These volunteers curate music requests and broadcast them during special programmes, providing round-the-clock entertainment for patients and residents. The station has also been awarded the title of UK Hospital Radio Station Of The Year an impressive four times.
John Watson, chairman of CareSound Radio, expressed his delight at receiving this recognition, attributing it to the hard work and commitment of the volunteers over the last 35 years. He acknowledged the support received from individuals, businesses, funding bodies, and NHS Tayside. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, CareSound Radio has not only persevered but also expanded its services to offer greater support to hospitals and care homes in the region.
One notable service provided by the station is live commentary at every St Johnstone home game since 1990, delivered to elderly and visually impaired fans within the stadium through radio broadcasts. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of volunteer groups in their communities. Representatives from CareSound Radio will accept the award crystal and certificate from Stephen Leckie Esq, Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross. Additionally, two volunteers from CareSound Radio will have the opportunity to attend a garden party at Holyrood House in July.
