Innovative Approach to Substance Use Challenges Recognised for Lanarkshire Recovery Service Team
The South Lanarkshire Recovery Oriented Justice Service (ROJS) recently received the Integrated Care Award at the Scotland’s Health Awards for their outstanding approach to tackling substance use challenges. The multidisciplinary team, including professionals from public health, social work, recovery groups, justice services, and families, was honoured for their innovative integration of services. The ROJS collaborated with Hamilton Sheriff Court’s Pan Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Problem Solving Court to establish Scotland’s first dual alcohol and drug problem-solving court. This initiative focuses on providing structured deferred sentences with intense intervention over six to nine months, shifting from punitive measures to a supportive system.
Gillian Booth, Justice Service Manager, expressed their elation at winning the national award, acknowledging the team’s hard work and dedication. She highlighted how the ROJS integrates public health, social, and justice approaches to make a profound impact on individuals and communities affected by substance use. The team, consisting of social workers, healthcare professionals, and support workers, offers immediate assistance to address substance use issues alongside broader social and personal needs. Partnering with various commissioned services, they have achieved success with participants accessing employment opportunities and staying committed to treatment programs.
The long-term goals of the ROJS include reducing drug-related deaths, preventing further criminalisation, and incorporating public health strategies into justice services. Councillor Margaret Walker commended the team’s exceptional work, emphasising their dedication to providing outstanding service to local communities. Professor Soumen Sengupta, Chief Officer of South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, lauded the team for their commitment to improving community health and well-being.
Professor Jann Gardner, Chief Executive of NHS Lanarkshire, expressed delight for the ROJS and other finalists from Lanarkshire who were recognised at the Scottish Health Awards for their exceptional contributions.
