John Amos, the beloved patriarch known for his role in the iconic sitcom “Good Times” and as an Emmy nominee for his performance in the groundbreaking miniseries “Roots,” has passed away at the age of 84.
Amos, renowned for his portrayal of James Evans Sr. on the hit 1970s show “Good Times,” which depicted one of the first Black two-parent families on television, earned acclaim and a nomination for his role in the impactful 1977 series “Roots.” The news of his death was confirmed by his publicist, Belinda Foster, on Tuesday, although further details were not immediately available.
His character, James Evans Sr., alongside the character of his wife Florida, played by Esther Rolle, resonated with audiences as they showcased a positive image of a Black family persevering in challenging circumstances in Chicago’s public housing projects. However, tensions arose on set due to creative differences, leading to Amos’ departure from the show after three seasons.
Despite the challenges faced during his time on “Good Times,” Amos later found success portraying an adult Kunta Kinte in the powerful miniseries “Roots,” which shed light on the realities of slavery in the United States. This role marked a turning point in his career, earning critical acclaim and recognition in the industry.
Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, Amos was originally a social worker before transitioning to acting. His diverse career saw him acting in various films and TV shows, including notable appearances in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Die Hard 2,” and “Coming to America.”
