Scot told ‘you’ll never run again’ proves doctors wrong by completing New York Marathon

A Scottish man who was told he would never run marathons again has defied the odds by completing the prestigious New York Marathon just seven months after fracturing his hip during the London Marathon in April 2024. Mark Baxter, 33, was rushed to hospital where surgeons inserted four pins and a titanium plate into his hip after he suffered a stress fracture. Despite being warned by doctors that he may never run long distances again, Mark underwent intense rehab and physiotherapy to prepare himself for the 42km New York Marathon.

Mark shared that he dedicated himself to daily recovery and building his strength back up after the operation. Despite initially being able to run only 10km, he continued to push himself and build his resilience. Mark’s determination paid off as he successfully completed the New York Marathon, fulfilling a dream that seemed out of reach when he was first told he wouldn’t be able to run marathons again.

Reflecting on his experience, Mark said, “The atmosphere was incredible, and the whole event was so well organised. Police were controlling the crowd and helicopters were hovering over us playing Frank Sinatra’s New York New York when we were running over the bridges.” Mark now aims to complete the ‘Big Six’ marathons, with a recent addition of a seventh run in Sydney added to the list. He has already completed the Berlin, London, and Chicago marathons in 2023, in addition to New York.

Mark’s inspiring journey serves as a reminder that with the right support and mindset, individuals can overcome even the most challenging obstacles in life. He encourages others to use their setbacks as fuel to achieve their full potential. Mark has also raised over £6,000 for charity through his passion for running and boxing, and he runs his own club at Meadowbank Stadium to inspire others to pursue sports.

In conclusion, Mark Baxter’s determination and resilience in completing the New York Marathon despite being told he may never run again is a testament to the power of mindset and perseverance. His story serves as an inspiration for anyone facing adversity, showing that with dedication and a positive attitude, one can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Mark’s commitment to pushing his limits and achieving his dreams highlights the importance of never giving up on oneself, no matter the obstacles faced.
