Bus drivers in Scotland are facing alarming levels of abuse while on the job, leading to calls for support from the SNP Government. A recent survey of over 1,100 drivers revealed that 84% had experienced increased abuse over the past year, including incidents of being shouted at or spat on by passengers. The findings come in the wake of a tragic incident in Elgin earlier this year where a bus driver, Keith Rollinson, passed away due to a cardiac arrest following an assault at a bus station. The assailant, a 15-year-old, later pleaded guilty to culpable homicide.
According to the survey, 83% of drivers reported verbal abuse, while 16% faced physical violence. Many drivers expressed feeling unsafe at work, with one anonymous driver sharing, “The abuse is terrible. I have been spat at three times by teenagers in the last twelve months, threats of harming me and saying they know where I live so threats to my home and family.” The majority of abuse incidents were not reported to the authorities or employers.
To address this concerning issue, Unite, the trade union representing bus drivers, is advocating for stronger legal protections and safety measures for drivers. These measures include increased police presence on buses, CCTV coverage, panic buttons, and enhanced security features. Unite General Secretary, Sharon Graham, highlighted the urgent need for action, stating, “The Scottish Government has to step up and step in to ensure our members feel safe at work.”
The union is also calling for a public transport summit with key stakeholders to address the issue of workplace abuse affecting both drivers and passengers. Both Police Scotland and Transport Scotland have underlined their commitment to tackling such incidents, urging individuals to report abuse and anti-social behaviour.
