Health Expert Warns British Consumers About Supplements
In a recent warning issued by Dr Federica Amati, head scientist at Zoe Health, Brits who rely on daily supplements for their health have been cautioned about the lack of oversight in the industry. Dr Amati highlighted the concern that no one is required to verify the contents of supplements, leading to potential discrepancies between what is advertised and what is actually in the products.
Many individuals take supplements daily to ensure they are getting essential vitamins and minerals, but Dr Amati advised consumers to choose brands that undergo third-party testing to ensure accuracy. A study mentioned by Dr Amati revealed that only 11 percent of supplements tested contained the amount of ingredients listed on the label, with some big brands found to have 40 percent less key vitamins than advertised.
The lack of regulation in the industry was a focal point of Dr Amati’s warning, as she emphasised the potential for consumers to unknowingly purchase capsules filled with ineffective or even harmful substances. She stressed the importance of opting for supplements that have been third-party tested, although she noted that very few companies undergo such testing.
Dr Amati also expressed scepticism about the effectiveness of menopause supplements, citing a lack of evidence to support their benefits. However, she did offer advice on four lifestyle changes that could help prevent premature death, including avoiding smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, staying physically active, and maintaining a healthy diet.
With concerns over the accuracy and safety of supplements on the market, Dr Federica Amati’s warning serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant and informed when choosing health products. Taking steps to ensure the quality and reliability of supplements can help individuals make better-informed decisions about their health and well-being.
