Nurse shares ‘extreme’ sign of diabetes you shouldn’t ignore during festive lead-up

**Nurse Warns of ‘Extreme’ Sign of Diabetes Ahead of Festive Season**

As we approach the festive season, it’s vital to be mindful of any changes in our bodies, as they could be indicative of underlying health issues. One such health concern is diabetes, which can manifest in different ways in both children and adults. Recognising the symptoms early is crucial, as untreated diabetes can lead to severe long-term health complications.

In line with World Diabetes Day on November 14, it is a timely reminder to be aware of the potential signs of diabetes. Nurse and educator Carolyn Byrd, known on TikTok as @carolynbyrd05, recently emphasised the importance of seeking medical advice if any symptoms are noticed. Symptoms of diabetes can often present gradually, making them easy to overlook without proper attention.

Carolyn highlighted a chart by the Diabetes Council outlining signs of hyperglycaemia, or high blood sugar, which primarily affects individuals with diabetes and can be harmful if left unaddressed. One prominent symptom is ‘extreme’ thirst, a common indicator of diabetes recognised by the NHS. Diabetes disrupts sugar (glucose) control in the blood, leading to increased urine production by the kidneys to eliminate excess sugar. Consequently, heightened thirst results as the body tries to compensate for fluid loss.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s essential not to dismiss any unusual symptoms experienced. Whether you find yourself unusually thirsty while shopping for Christmas gifts or preparing holiday meals, excessive thirst could signal diabetes or another underlying issue. However, it’s important to note that increased thirst alone does not definitively indicate diabetes but warrants a consultation with a GP for further evaluation.

Additional symptoms shared by the Diabetes Council include frequent urination, dry skin, hunger, blurry vision, fatigue, and slow wound healing. The NHS advises seeking medical attention promptly if experiencing symptoms such as intense thirst, frequent urination (especially at night), profound fatigue, unexplained weight loss, itching around the genitals, or blurred vision.

**Insights and Summary:**

Being proactive in monitoring our health, especially during busy times like the festive season, is crucial for early detection and management of health conditions such as diabetes. Nurses and healthcare educators play a vital role in raising awareness about subtle signs that could indicate underlying health issues. Recognising symptoms promptly and seeking medical advice can help individuals take control of their health and prevent potential complications down the line. As we navigate through the holiday season, prioritising self-care and listening to our bodies can contribute to maintaining overall well-being and enjoying the festivities without health concerns looming in the background.
