Dumfries is set to kick off the Christmas season with a festive light-up event, along with the return of the popular Lights of Hope initiative. The Dumfries Partnership Action Group has organised a lineup of activities for all ages, aiming to attract thousands of residents to the town centre. The event will feature entertainment starting from 3pm at the Planestanes, including performances by Alice Faye, Dumfries Town Band, the cast of the pantomime “Hansel & Gretel,” and more. The festive fun will be compered by Alive 107.3fm radio personality, Lee Medd.
In Queensberry Square, there will be various attractions such as amusements, appearances by Queen of the South FC and Solway Sharks, Nith Inshore Rescue, and illuminated tractors gearing up for a fundraising run later in November. Local schools’ choirs will be showcasing their talent at the Loreburne Centre, and the adorable Dalscone Donkeys will be making an appearance on Queensberry Street. The highlight of the evening will be the Christmas lights switch-on by reigning Queen of the South, Lucy Galligan, at 6.30pm followed by a procession led by real reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh.
The Lights of Hope initiative, first introduced last year, will see additional lights brightening up the town well beyond Christmas into the New Year. Sponsored by Mark Jardine of The People’s Project, the lights will remain illuminated each evening throughout January and February. Mark Jardine expressed the importance of spreading cheer and lifting spirits during the darker winter months through this initiative.
