South Lanarkshire Council Receives Over £500,000 in Road Safety Funding
Road safety improvements are underway in South Lanarkshire as the council has secured over £500,000 in funding from the Scottish Government. The funding, amounting to £496,642 from a national road safety investment fund, is aimed at enhancing safety measures on local roads to reduce risks and casualties.
The allocated funds will be utilised for various safety enhancements, including the installation of signs, markings, and anti-skid surfacing on roads across South Lanarkshire. Additionally, an extra grant of up to £31,000 has been awarded from a separate fund dedicated to assessing the potential implementation of 20mph speed limits on nearly 6000 streets in the area starting next year.
Colin Park, head of roads and transportation at South Lanarkshire, highlighted the ongoing safety initiatives, stating, “The road safety investment fund will be used for signing, road markings, verge marker posts and anti-skid surfacing at locations identified in last year’s annual assessment of priorities for casualty reduction on the roads network.”
The junction of Hillhouse Road and Technology Avenue in Hamilton is among the areas where these safety upgrades are being performed. North Lanarkshire, the neighbouring council, is also set to receive funding of £518,137.47 from the same road safety fund to support various safety schemes such as junction improvements, resurfacing, and pedestrian crossings.
Moreover, South Lanarkshire is one of the 19 councils benefitting from additional funding under the 20mph fund. This funding will aid in the evaluation and potential implementation of lower speed limits in designated areas to protect pedestrians and cyclists, creating safer environments within communities.
Transport secretary Fiona Hyslop emphasised the significance of road safety, stating, “Road safety is a top priority for the Scottish Government; this [total] £14m investment underlines our commitment to supporting our partners implement schemes that protect the public.”
The implementation of consistent lower speed limits across Scotland is a key focus, with the aim of fostering safer streets for all road users. The council is set to review the assessment of streets for potential 20mph limits and present proposals to a committee in 2025, following the additional funding allocation.
