Former UK Home Secretary Lord Blunkett has spoken out against the safety standards of the London Underground, labeling it a ‘death trap’ following an incident where he fell into a gap at a tube station. The Labour peer, who is visually impaired, suffered injuries when his feet slipped into the space between the train and the platform at Westminster station. Lord Blunkett, who now sits in the House of Lords, is urging Transport for London (TfL) to take more action to ensure the safety of visually impaired individuals using the underground network.
The incident occurred while Lord Blunkett was boarding a District Line train with his guide dog, and he described feeling his feet disappearing into the gap, leading to him falling face down onto the carriage floor. Despite suffering bruises and grazes, an X-ray revealed no broken bones. Lord Blunkett, who recently experienced a heart attack and is on blood thinners, highlighted the dangers of such incidents for individuals on medication that could result in severe bruising or bleeding.
In a statement, Lord Blunkett expressed his frustration with the lack of assistance for visually impaired passengers at tube stations, especially during busy periods. He called on TfL to address the wide platform gaps and ensure there are staff members available to help passengers, emphasizing the importance of safety for all commuters. Lord Blunkett plans to meet with TfL to seek answers and push for an urgent review of safety measures at the busiest tube stations.
In response to the incident, Nick Dent, London Underground’s director of customer operations, expressed regret over Lord Blunkett’s injuries and stated that discussions would be held to review the handling of the incident. Dent reiterated the commitment to prioritising customer and staff safety, acknowledging the rarity of such incidents but emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures across the network.
