Bowel cancer warning as woman, 25, diagnosed urges everyone to know these usual symptoms

A 25-year-old woman’s battle with bowel cancer has prompted a warning for others to be aware of the common symptoms associated with the disease. Ellie Wilcock, a content manager from Peterborough, was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer after initially mistaking her symptoms for a urinary tract infection (UTI). Despite experiencing sharp abdominal pains and fatigue, Ellie attributed her discomfort to a UTI. Doctors initially suspected reproductive system issues or an ovarian cyst due to the localized pain in her abdomen. However, further investigations revealed the severity of her condition as the cancer had already spread throughout her body.

Recalling her symptoms, Ellie mentioned that the pain she experienced was on her left side due to a tumour obstructing her large bowel. She highlighted changes in her bowel habits, with alternating bouts of diarrhoea and constipation, along with persistent fatigue. Noticing blood in her stool was a key warning sign for Ellie, who emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice if such symptoms arise. Ellie’s journey underscores the significance of early detection and prompt medical attention in tackling cancer.

According to Ellie, some doctors initially thought she had an ovarian cyst, but she presented symptoms more indicative of bowel cancer. Reflecting on her experience, she stressed the importance of not ignoring unusual symptoms and seeking medical help promptly. Ellie visited her GP in April 2022, and after her pain worsened, she went to A&E where the devastating diagnosis was made. Following several operations, Ellie received the all-clear in August after the cancer had spread to her ovaries, liver, and peritoneum.

Ellie’s story serves as a reminder for everyone to be vigilant about their health and not dismiss any persistent symptoms. With an increasing number of cases of bowel cancer in individuals under 50, it is crucial to be aware of potential signs, such as fatigue and changes in bowel habits. Seeking medical advice for symptoms lasting over three weeks is essential, as early diagnosis can significantly impact treatment outcomes and recovery.

Ellie’s courage in sharing her journey and raising awareness about bowel cancer highlights the importance of listening to our bodies and taking proactive steps towards our health. Her story encourages others to be proactive in their health monitoring and to seek medical attention for any concerning symptoms promptly. In the face of adversity, Ellie’s resilience and determination serve as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
