ScotRail Urged to Scrap First Class Seats as Usage Hits Only 2% Last Year
ScotRail is facing calls to eliminate pricey first class seats as statistics reveal that just 2% of them were utilised last year, resulting in a staggering 150,000 luxury seats being unoccupied every month. Despite widespread complaints of overcrowding on crucial services throughout the year, particularly during the reduced timetable from July to September, the Scottish Greens, who obtained the data through freedom of information, have criticised the underutilisation of seating while standard class passengers often have to stand.
From April 2023 to April 2024, only around 2% of the 2 million available first class tickets were purchased on ScotRail services, totaling 39,000 tickets. The Scottish Greens are now urging the nationalised railway operator to declassify first class seating and gradually phase out luxury carriages. They pointed out examples of other UK rail companies like London Northwestern Railway, Southeastern Rail, and Greater Anglia that have already taken steps to remove first class seats.
Mark Ruskell, transport spokesman for the Scottish Greens, emphasised the importance of making rail travel inclusive for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay extra. He highlighted the wastage of nearly empty first class carriages while standard class compartments are often overcrowded. The Greens’ data indicates that out of nearly 153,000 first class seats available for purchase monthly, only a fraction are sold, with rates as low as 1.3% in some months.
ScotRail’s commercial director, Claire Dickie, defended the availability of first class services on selected routes, highlighting that the revenue generated from these seats is reinvested to benefit all customers. Despite the push to remove first class seating, Transport Scotland stated that there are currently no plans to do so.
