A dedicated Beano superfan, Kevin Payne, has amassed thousands of comics in his attic after diligently purchasing a copy almost every week since he was just 10 years old. Starting his collection in 1975 when he bought his first copy for 2p as a paperboy, the 60-year-old now boasts over 2400 editions of the iconic British comic. Kevin’s collection includes nearly every edition from the 2000th issue onwards, with a significant investment of £160 made for a super-rare old copy.
Reflecting on his collecting journey, Kevin shared, “I decided to start collecting seriously when I was a paperboy. I said to myself I would keep collecting until I was old. To be honest, I don’t really read them much now. I think I’m too grown up for them. But as long as new issues keep coming out, I’ll keep buying them.” Despite outgrowing the comic’s content, Kevin continues to show his loyalty by maintaining his collection over the years.
Kevin, residing in West Heath, Birmingham, considers the Beano as the most iconic British comic, having surpassed rival publications like The Dandy, which is no longer available in paper form. While he is less inclined to search for rare old editions nowadays, Kevin plans to continue adding the weekly new releases to his collection.
