A man from Motherwell has been charged following the seizure of a substantial amount of cannabis valued at £6.1 million in a County Lines operation. Craig Tomlinson, aged 50, faced charges related to the supply of Class B drugs after British Transport Police conducted raids at key stations in Manchester earlier this month. Tomlinson appeared before Carlisle Magistrates on Thursday, November 13, and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance at Manchester Crown Court scheduled for December 12. The operation, known as Op Blume, resulted in the recovery of a quarter of a ton of cannabis from an address in Manchester.
The multi-agency operation was led by British Transport Police’s specialist County Lines task force with support from Greater Manchester Police and City of London Police dog section. The operation involved various units like BTP’s dog section, Neighbourhood Policing Team, and Operational Support Unit, as well as plain-clothed police officers and knife arches. Over the course of two days, nine individuals were arrested, 45 stop searches were conducted, and three addresses in Manchester, Rochdale, and West Mercia were searched. Apart from the cannabis seizure, a knife and £30,000 in cash were also confiscated, and two children were identified and referred to safeguarding services.
Detective Superintendent Craig Payne of British Transport Police commended the operation’s success in disrupting criminal networks and protecting vulnerable individuals. Xiaowu Chen, 56, from Manchester, and a 17-year-old from West Mercia were also charged in connection with the supply of Class B drugs. County Lines is a term used to describe criminal networks involved in distributing illegal drugs using dedicated phone lines. Detective Superintendent Payne emphasized the ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal enterprises and safeguard those at risk of exploitation.
