West Lothian towns are poised to receive a significant boost with the introduction of a new battery storage site. A planning application has been submitted for the Middlerigg battery storage plant situated between Bathgate and Armadale. The proposal, put forward by renewable energy developer Galileo to West Lothian Council, outlines a community benefit fund of £500,000 over the project’s lifespan for the local communities of Bathgate and Armadale.
The battery energy storage system (BESS), with a capacity of up to 49.9MW, is planned to be located near the A801, northwest of Bathgate Substation. This innovative technology aims to support the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy by storing surplus electricity in rechargeable batteries during low demand periods and releasing it back to the grid during peak times, enhancing energy balance and maximising the use of renewables in combatting climate change.
Galileo’s Senior Project Manager, Laura Petrie, emphasised the company’s commitment to ensuring the project brings substantial economic and social value to the local community. The £500,000 community benefit fund is expected to focus on health/physical activity and training/education initiatives. Galileo also aims to engage local suppliers and contractors in the construction and operation of the battery storage facility.
