Student lost almost half her body weight in six months after waking up unable to eat

A student from Glasgow, Shannon Dunbar-Dawe, woke up one day in May 2022 unable to eat, leading to a dramatic loss in body weight over six months. Shannon, 30, initially attributed her symptoms to excessive coffee consumption as she experienced bloating, nausea, and severe stomach swelling, making it impossible to eat more than a few digestive biscuits. Doctors dismissed her symptoms as anxiety or an eating disorder until she was diagnosed with gastroparesis—a rare condition that paralyses stomach nerves and muscles, making digestion slow.

After enduring excruciating pain and dismissive treatment by medical professionals, Shannon’s weight dropped from 64kg to 40kg as she struggled to eat and was even force-fed during a hospital stay. Desperate for help, Shannon turned to a private doctor who correctly diagnosed her condition. Now dependent on a feeding tube and weighing just 5.6 stone, Shannon faces daily discomfort and limited options for treatment.

Shannon’s sister, Charelle, has started a fundraising campaign to support Shannon’s recovery and potential gastric pacemaker surgery, which could improve her quality of life. Shannon hopes to raise awareness of gastroparesis and ensure quicker diagnosis for others experiencing similar symptoms to hers. Despite the challenges she faces, Shannon remains determined to fight for her health and raise awareness of her rare condition.

In an emotional plea, Shannon expresses her desire to regain her former self and live a fulfilling life once more. Meanwhile, her sister Charelle is dedicated to supporting Shannon on her journey to recovery and restoring her quality of life.
