Dubai cops probe gangland husband of Scots vodka queen linked to Kinahan crime cartel

Dubai authorities are currently investigating the alleged gangster husband of Nicola Morrissey, known as the Scots vodka queen, who is believed to have ties to the Kinahan crime cartel. Johnny Morrissey, 64, is considered a ‘key member’ of the Kinahan crime clan, and Spanish investigators leading the probe into his business dealings have sought assistance from Dubai. Following his arrest more than two years ago on suspicion of money laundering and involvement in a criminal gang, Mr. Morrissey was released on bail in June after spending time in custody since September 2022.

The investigation into Morrissey’s activities is proving to be intricate, with international implications slowing down progress. The court overseeing the case is awaiting the results of a rogatory commission sent to Dubai, indicating the complexity and scope of the ongoing investigation. Morrissey, along with his wife Nicola and another individual under investigation in Spain, remain on conditional bail as the legal proceedings unfold.

Johnny Morrissey, a former doorman from Rochdale, was named in a US Treasury list of Kinahan cartel key members, where he was identified as an enforcer facilitating international drug shipments and involved in money laundering. The Spanish Civil Guard, supported by various law enforcement agencies including the Garda and National Crime Agency, conducted the operation leading to Morrissey’s arrest and alleged involvement in laundering large sums of money through his business, Nero Drinks.

One of the tactics reportedly used by Morrissey in his alleged criminal activities was the Hawala method, a system involving money transfer through brokers and coded tokens. The investigation revealed a complex web of companies and transactions aimed at concealing the illicit origins of the funds. Morrissey was released on bail after posting a £50,000 bond, with strict conditions restricting his movements and requiring regular court appearances.

The Operation Shovel probe against the Kinahan crime cartel has faced challenges, with Spanish prosecutors seeking assistance from other countries such as the UK to gather crucial information. Efforts to extradite current cartel boss Daniel Kinahan from Dubai have intensified, amidst reports of potential relocation plans to countries like Russia, Iran, or North Korea. The complex web of criminal activities and international connections underscores the intricate nature of tackling organised crime on a global scale.

Insights:
Organised crime investigations involving international networks present complex challenges requiring cooperation across borders. The use of sophisticated money laundering tactics and intricate business structures makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to unravel criminal activities and hold individuals accountable. The ongoing probe into Johnny Morrissey’s alleged involvement with the Kinahan crime cartel highlights the need for continued collaboration between countries to combat transnational crime effectively.
