New proposals from the Scottish Government could see rent caps introduced to help tenants across Lanarkshire. If approved, these proposals would prevent landlords from hiking prices by more than six per cent. Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has welcomed these proposals which would apply across Scotland.
The Housing (Scotland) Bill is currently being scrutinised by MSPs. If voted for by the Scottish Parliament, the bill could protect tenants by capping rent increases to a maximum of six per cent. The rent caps would be limited to the Consumer Price Index plus one per cent, up to a maximum increase of six per cent. This measure aims to prevent huge increases in rents and stop landlords from excessively hiking rental prices.
The proposed rent cap would apply to rent increases during a tenancy and crucially, in between tenancies as well. It will only be implemented in areas where rent controls are already in place. Clare Haughey MSP intends to work with South Lanarkshire Council to explore how residents in the constituency could benefit from these protections if the bill becomes law.
This proposal is part of the Scottish Government’s wider New Deal for Tenants initiative, which seeks to enhance tenants’ rights. These rights include the ability to keep pets, decorate homes, have better protection against eviction, and increased support for survivors of domestic abuse.
