The Democratic vice presidential nominee’s assertion of being in Hong Kong during the 1989 massacre has been questioned as public records indicate otherwise.
A recent CNN report highlighted a 2019 radio interview where Walz mentioned being in Hong Kong on the day of the massacre, a claim that seems to contradict available evidence. The Associated Press reached out to the Harris-Walz presidential campaign for clarification on these discrepancies but did not receive a response.
The Tiananmen Square massacre occurred on June 4, 1989, following a seven-week demonstration in Beijing by pro-democracy students. The Chinese military crackdown resulted in the deaths of at least 500 individuals. Contrary to Walz’s statements, accounts suggest he was not in Hong Kong in May 1989 as he previously indicated but rather in Nebraska. Public records indicate that he travelled to Hong Kong and China later in August of the same year.
In addition to the Hong Kong claim, Walz has faced questions about other statements, including misrepresenting his family’s infertility treatment, conflicting information about a 1995 drunk driving arrest, and discrepancies regarding his rank in the National Guard. Minnesota Public Radio uncovered evidence suggesting that in May 1989, Walz, then a 25-year-old teacher, was still in Nebraska, preparing to travel to China through WorldTeach.
Despite criticism from some Republicans about his China-related activities, which include teaching and visiting the country multiple times, Walz has maintained his interest in the region. The University of Notre Dame’s associate professor of global affairs, Kyle Jaros, noted that attacks on opponents with ties to China have become a common tactic.
As the election season progresses, the scrutiny surrounding Walz’s past statements and claims is likely to continue, with Republican opponents seeking to exploit any perceived inaccuracies. The governor’s assertions regarding his whereabouts during critical historical events will undoubtedly be subject to further investigation and questioning.
